Intent

At Exhall Junior School, we believe every child is an artist in the making. Our Art curriculum encourages pupils to express themselves with imagination and confidence while developing a genuine appreciation of creativity in all its forms. We build on early artistic experiences and introduce children to a diverse range of art and design, helping them to understand how creativity reflects and shapes the world.

Art at Exhall isn’t just about making things look beautiful, it’s about seeing, thinking, and feeling differently. Pupils learn that art tells stories, communicates ideas and connects people across cultures and time. Through studying artists from many backgrounds, they also learn respect, empathy and curiosity, values that reflect our motto of Strong Roots, Wise Minds and Brave Hearts.

Implementation

Our pupils explore art through hands-on experiences that develop key skills and techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture and design. Lessons are practical, progressive and enjoyable – each year building on what came before. Children learn to use materials with care, understand artistic language and analyse their own work and that of others.

Art isn’t confined to the classroom; it links across subjects and often enhances learning in areas such as English, History or Science. From sketching scenes inspired by poetry to creating visual interpretations of historical periods, pupils use their creativity to deepen understanding and express their ideas in unique ways.

Impact

By the time they leave Exhall Junior, our pupils are confident, thoughtful young artists. They can talk about their creative choices, recognise the work of great artists, and take pride in their own creations. More importantly, they carry forward the courage to create, the wisdom to reflect and the independence to keep exploring the world through art.
