“Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.”

Albert Einstein

Intent

At Exhall Junior School, we believe mathematics is both a vital life skill and a way of thinking. Our curriculum develops confidence, curiosity and a love of challenge. We want every pupil to see themselves as a mathematician, someone who can reason, solve problems and apply learning with courage and precision.

Our goal is for pupils to leave Exhall fluent in the fundamentals of maths, confident in using mathematical language, and ready to apply their knowledge creatively to the world around them.

Implementation

Maths is taught daily through structured, engaging lessons that build progressively across Key Stage 2. We use a mastery approach, ensuring every pupil secures firm foundations before moving forward. Lessons combine fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, giving children opportunities to explore, question and justify their thinking.

Regular practice sessions reinforce key number skills, while practical activities and cross-curricular links help pupils understand how maths connects to real life, from science investigations to design projects and financial understanding.

Impact

By the time they leave Exhall Junior, pupils are confident, resilient and logical thinkers. They can apply mathematical skills independently, explain their reasoning clearly, and tackle unfamiliar problems with determination. They understand that mathematics isn’t just a subject, it’s a way of thinking that builds wise minds and brave hearts for life.
