“Where words fail, music speaks.”

Hans Christian Andersen

Intent

At Exhall Junior School, we believe music is for everyone. It’s a universal language that connects us, builds confidence, and brings joy to learning. Through our Music curriculum, pupils develop creativity, teamwork and self-expression, discovering how music can tell stories, lift emotions and unite communities.

We want every child to experience the power of performance and the satisfaction of perseverance. Music at Exhall encourages courage, curiosity and compassion, values that resonate through every note we sing or play.

Implementation

Music is taught through lively, practical lessons that combine performing, composing, listening and appraising. Pupils learn to sing, play instruments, and understand musical notation and structure. Our curriculum draws on diverse genres and cultures, helping pupils appreciate music’s role in society and its power to inspire.

Children regularly perform for others, in assemblies, concerts and trust-wide events, developing confidence and pride in their achievements. We also offer instrumental tuition, enrichment clubs and opportunities to collaborate with visiting musicians. Teachers are supported by music specialists, ensuring lessons are vibrant and inclusive for all.

Impact

By the time pupils leave Exhall Junior, they can listen with understanding, perform with confidence, and talk about music with insight. More than that, they recognise the joy that comes from creativity and the value of shared experience. Music at Exhall helps children grow in confidence and empathy, building strong roots in community and brave hearts in performance.
