Intent

At Exhall Junior, Science inspires curiosity about the natural and man-made world. Our aim is for every child to develop scientific knowledge, skills, and vocabulary, while fostering a lasting love of discovery. Pupils learn to question, investigate, and make sense of the world around them, developing respect for the environment and confidence in their own ideas. Science at Exhall encourages creativity, critical thinking, and resilience, helping children see themselves as active investigators and problem-solvers.

Implementation

Science is taught through engaging, hands-on lessons that combine practical work, observation, and enquiry. Pupils explore the five main types of scientific investigation, observation over time, comparative and fair testing, identifying and classifying, pattern seeking, and researching ideas, while developing skills in measurement, ICT, and communication. Lessons build progressively across Key Stages, linking to STEM subjects and real-world applications. Learning is enriched through visits, residentials, and practical experiences, and pupils are encouraged to collaborate, explore their own lines of inquiry, and reflect on outcomes.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Exhall are confident, curious, and capable young scientists. They can explain their understanding, use scientific vocabulary accurately, and make connections between scientific concepts and the wider world. Pupils enjoy exploring, can design their own investigations, interpret results critically, and demonstrate resilience when experiments do not go as planned. Most importantly, they leave Exhall with a lifelong fascination for science and an understanding of how it shapes the world around them.
