“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.”
Frank Smith
Intent
At Exhall Junior, our Spanish curriculum inspires a love of language and curiosity about different cultures. We aim to develop pupils’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while building cultural awareness and understanding. Pupils develop the foundations for future language learning, recognising both similarities and differences between cultures, and fostering confidence and resilience as learners.
Implementation
Spanish lessons are interactive and engaging, using games, songs, and the Language Angels platform. Lessons focus on phonics, vocabulary, and grammar, helping pupils understand and produce increasingly complex sentences. Pupils develop fluency, comprehension of authentic texts, and confidence in writing for different purposes. Spanish is embedded across the school day through greetings, classroom signage, and cross-curricular links.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils communicate confidently in Spanish, using an expanding vocabulary and understanding of grammar. They can respond to spoken and written language, write for different purposes, and compare cultures. Pupils demonstrate curiosity, perseverance, and resilience, enjoying their language learning journey while building skills for lifelong linguistic and cultural understanding.
